10 hosting items that are actually worth the investment

As someone who’s hosted everything from toddler birthdays to dinners for Instagram’s CEO, I’ve learned what pieces are worth splurging on and which ones just take up storage. Here are 10 hosting essentials I actually use and love, the ones that keep showing up on my tables again and again.
1: A beautiful linen tablecloth
You can use it as a full table cover or layer it with a patterned topper for texture. My go-to is the Heather Taylor Home Soho style, but I also discovered a gorgeous one on a recent trip to London that I’ve already used a dozen times.
2: A good set of cutlery
Opt for a 5-piece set—not smaller. The teaspoons work for tea parties, and the smaller forks are perfect for casual gatherings. I own 50 sets of Sabre cutlery in white, and we’ve used them for countless events. Another tip: hunt vintage! Mismatched pieces can work if the sizing is consistent.
3: A wooden bowl or serving board
Perfect for buffets, grazing boards, or even as a caterer’s staging piece. High-quality wood just photographs—and performs—better. I’m a big fan of Holland Bowl Mill aesthetic and durability.
4: A gorgeous ice bucket
Go big, large enough to hold wine or GHIA bottles. I love sneaking in floral ice, which adds an unexpected visual detail to your ice bucket. Little-known trick: you can buy floral ice spheres at Bristol Farms.

I’ve been collecting vintage Coca-Cola crates and they’ve become staples at my events. We’ve stacked them to hold signage, drinks, or even a lemonade station. They add instant character and height to any party setup.
6: Neutral plates
Invest in simple dinner plates as your foundation. You can always layer in fun salad plates later. Heath Ceramics is a classic go-to, but for a more elevated look, I love Ginori.
7: Candle stands that can flex
Astier de Villatte makes my favorites—they are elegant but adaptable. Keep them simple and switch up the candles (colored, textured, tall, or short) depending on the mood.
8: Good serving utensils
Even when caterers plate the food, your serving pieces matter. I recently found a set I love that has served everything from roast carrots to herby cauliflower. They always draw compliments.
9: A quality water dispenser
We use one at nearly every party. Look for one that’s easy to clean and leak-proof—cheaper options can cause mid-party spills. A slightly nicer one goes a long way in keeping things tidy. Whether you’re serving Arnold Palmers, cucumber water, or sangria, a chic pitcher or beverage dispenser creates a real moment. I’ve used glass ones for lemonade and iced tea, and they always elevate the experience.
10: A classic cake stand
A cake stand is more versatile than it sounds. I use mine for birthday cakes, yes—but also to display pastries, stacked fruit, or even savory bites during brunch. It adds height and elegance to any spread. Opt for a neutral ceramic or glass one you can dress up or down depending on the occasion.
